The Patek Philippe Ref. 5016A-010, a one-off piece created for Only Watch 2015, the charity auction/gala in support of Duchenne muscular dystrophy research, a biannual effort championed by Prince Albert II of Monaco has just laid claim to being the most expensive watch in the world.
First introduced in 1993, the 5016 was Patek's most complicated wristwatch and featured a minute repeater, tourbillon as well as a retrograde perpetual calendar. The special creation with a distinctive blue enamel dial and gold applique Breguet numerals was listed at CHF 700,000 to 900,000, but eventually sold for CHF 7.3 million Swiss francs (USD$7.3 million, 6.7 million euros) following intense bidding from two anonymous bidders over telephone.
No bling. A world record price for a steel watch with high complication.
