Precision and stellar rhythm in the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Biretrograde Perpetual Calendar - Watches & Wonders 2026 #WatchesandWonders2026

At the intersection of ancient astronomy and Genevan watchmaking excellence, Roger Dubuis has unveiled a timepiece defined by a distinct celestial rhythm. This elegant creation does more than simply count the unfolding units of time on Earth; it tracks the precise phases of the Moon through a newly upgraded calibre. As the Maison prepares for Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026, it draws inspiration from the stellar observations that have shaped our understanding of time and space.

Mastering the perpetual calendar is one of the most demanding pursuits in the industry, and it was a complication that particularly captivated Mr. Roger Dubuis. His patient nature was ideally suited to the complexity of the mechanism, which remains a signature of the Maison. This latest version features a signature biretrograde display where the day and date indications sweep across elliptic scales before returning to their starting point at the end of each cycle.

Inside the 18K pink gold case, the new RD850 Calibre represents an upgraded generation of movement. Comprised of 435 components and offering 60 hours of power reserve, this self-winding engine was developed and crafted entirely in-house at the Roger Dubuis manufacture in Geneva. A key functional improvement is the addition of a month corrector, which allows the month indication to be manually set with one simple adjustment, making regulation much faster and easier.

The watch features an astronomical Moonphase at 6 o'clock, engineered to follow the Moon's orbital cycle around the Earth. While a standard mechanism typically rounds the cycle to 29.5 days, this astronomical display will remain accurate for around 122 years before requiring its first adjustment. It reveals the waxing and waning of the Moon almost exactly as it appears in the night sky.

Every detail of the RD850 has earned the Poinçon de Genève, a prestigious certification that attests to the origin, finishing, and performance of the movement within the Canton of Geneva. Among the nineteen different finishes, the most distinctive is the rare inner angle finishing. This challenging technique is achieved by craftspeople who work to press and push the material to create a final polished look, a traditional mark of high quality.

Peering into the dial is like looking into the night sky, revealed through nine unique layers and a new "Astral Blue" colourway. These layers include ecliptic counters in mother-of-pearl, a leap year disc with a grey coating, and a main Moonphase disc crafted in aventurine with a domed 18K pink gold moon. Presented on an Astral Blue calfskin leather strap, the 40 mm timepiece embodies the precision and mysteries found within the universe.
