The Alpine A110 & A110S Now Available in Singapore

By Peter Vossner

Alpine was born in the Alps from the mind of its founder, Jean Rédélé. Over the years, the brand has set itself apart with its French-style sports cars.

Since 1955, Alpine has competed at the highest levels of international motorsport and recorded a string of famous victories including the overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1978, and the winning of the 1973 FIA World Rally Championship teams' title. Over the following decades, Alpine continued to establish itself as a leading manufacturer of lightweight, fun to drive sports cars.

The Alpine A110 has its roots back from 1961 to 1977, styled as a "Berlinette" in the post-WWII era, referring to a small enclosed two-door Berline, better-known as a coupé. In 2017, the iconic A110 would rejuvenate into a modern iteration, developed under Renault-Nissan partnership.

Launched at the Geneva International Motor show, the new A110 is a two-seater sports coupé with centrally-mounted rear-end engine, remaining true to its Alpine spirit of elegance, agility and authenticity.

The car is made at the Dieppe plant in France, and is lightweight and compact with its 96% aluminium body and chassis. It weighs in at just 1,080 kg (without options) with an optimum weight distribution -- 56% rear, with the centrally-mounted engine, and 44% front, with the fuel tank located behind the front axle).

All these result in a  perfect driver-vehicle interface and outstanding agility, most pronounced round the winding mountain roads where Alpine first forged its singular reputation in the sixties and seventies.

The A110 is powered by a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder, direct-injection turbocharged engine developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance. Engineers from Alpine and Renault Sport teamed up to put together a very special Alpine model with made-to-measure systems for functions such as air admission, turbocharging, exhaust and mapping. The new car delivers power of 185 kW (252 bhp) and peak torque of 320 Nm. Given the low vehicle weight, the weight/power ratio of 4.3 kg per bhp ensures exceptional performance, starting with acceleration of just 4.5 seconds from standstill to 100 km/h.

Like its illustrious predecessor, the A110 is not only for experienced racing drivers. The intensely pleasurable road driving experience is open to all. That explains its three different driving modes — Normal, Sport and Track — which adjust gearbox and engine response to driver preferences. Motorists thus enjoy a range of driving experiences, with assistance configurable from maximum down to zero. In other words, A110 is equally at home on everyday road journeys as on the racetrack.

The Alpine A110 stands in a category to itself on the sportscar scene. It has a flat floor throughout and a functional diffuser, technical design choices derived from competition motoring practice, but the overriding design consideration was to keep the smooth, sleek lines that typify Alpine. That explains why this is the only car in its category capable of reaching 250 km/h without a fin or spoiler.

A premium iteration of the standard A110 is available, with the Legende GT offered with 18-inch diamond-cut alloys, amber leather upholstery, carbon and copper interior trim, plus an optional fitted luggage set.

Introduced in June 2019, the A110S is a high performance and lightweight variant of the A110. The A110S benefits from increased power output of 40 more hp topping at 288 hp, from its 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Ride height is lowered by 4 mm and the car is fitted with special Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres having a stickier compound contributing to more grip on the tarmac, complemented by GT Race Rims.

The engine was retuned and a larger turbocharger installed. The peak power is achieved at 1400 rpm higher than the standard engine. The 7-speed dual-clutch transmission remains unchanged. The new springs and anti-roll bars are 50 and 100 percent stiffer than the standard version.

The A110S can accelerate to 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 4.4 seconds (0.1 seconds faster than standard car) and has an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

Aesthetic changes include flag motifs, orange brake calipers and optional matte grey paintwork and lighter Fuchs alloy wheels. The carbon fibre roof with a gloss finish reduces 1.9 kg from the total weight of the car which is 1,114 kg.

In the cockpit, orange stitching and black Dinamica emphasize the strong personality of the Alpine A110S. The leather and Dinamica steering wheels incorporates an orange '12 o'clock' stitched marker and topstitching in orange. The pedals and footrests are in aluminum; the carbon fiber and orange flags– the same as those on the body – bring the final touch to the cabin.
