BVLGARI Celebrates 130th Anniversary with New B.zero1 Roma Ring

24 March 2014

By Scott Campbell

In the 130 years since Sotiro Bulgari first opened the first BVLGARI boutique in Rome back in 1884, the jeweller has grown from strength to strength, becoming the fine jewellery adorned by movie stars and high societies around the world.

Today, the Italian Jeweller stands for the very best in fine artisanal workmanship, in its use of the most lustrous and precious gems, utilization of innovative materials and crowned by unrivaled design.

To mark its 130th anniversary, BVLGARI will be launching special editions of jewellery, watches, accessories and perfumes, kicking off with the new B.zero1 Roma, as a tribute to its home, the Eternal City that is Rome.

The B.zero1 ring is one of the house’s most iconic pieces, launched at the end of 1999, featuring the Tubogas motif and the BVLGARI logo — two hallmarks of the label’s icongraphy — showcasing it’s radical yet industrial design, rich creative heritage, and enduring style.

Its central looping band references the golden hoops of the Tubogas’s flexible tubular chain, a late 19th century design named after the winding tubes of the petrol pump or gas hose that BVLGARI had reintroduced in the 1940s. The band is created using an extremely sophisticated technique in which long metal strips are wrapped and interlocked without any soldering.

The two flat rings that clasp around the sleek central loops are each engraved with the imposing gravitas of the BVLGARI double logo, with the iconic font introduced for the first time in 1934 with the revamping of the flagship via Condotti store in Rome. It was on this occasion that the BVLGARI family decided to adopt the ancient Roman epigraphy incorporating the Latin “V” instead of the Anglicised “U”.

The new Roma interpretation of the B.zero1 is marked by soft pink gold and four bands of warm bronze ceramic. Its circular form brings to mind the circularity of the most representative Roman architectural masterpieces, from the imposing circular grandeur of the ancient Colosseum, Castel Sant’Angelo to the Pantheon.

Effortlessly fusing past, present and future, the iconic shape of the ring – the eternal circle – is a perfect metaphor for continuity.
