Aith a new book published by Rizzoli, Dior by Avedon explores the heritage of Christian Dior's early years, beginning in 1947 and the 30 years that followed, as captured through the lens of Richard Avedon.
The French luxury house provides an alternative perspective of its founder's legacy, through the eyes of the famed photographer whose iconic work not only changed fashion photography but also changed the way the world looks at fashion.
The tome includes 150 iconic and many never-before-published photographs by Avedon, featuring glamorous models and celebrities, including Marlene Dietrich, Suzy Parker, Sunny Hartnett, Dovima, Carmen Dell'Orefice, Dorian Leigh, Capucine, Lauren Hutton, Anjelica Huston, and Barbra Streisand.
With an eye for moments of grace, drama, and humor, as well as a mastery of light and contrast, Avedon captures the essence of Dior’s elegant designs, the style and personality of the iconic women who wore them, and incredible moments in photography that will intrigue photography, art, and fashion lovers alike.
Amongst the emblematic photos featured include Audrey Hepburn wandering the cobblestone streets of Paris to Dovima, wearing the Soirée de Paris evening gown from 1955, striking a pose between two elephants, which is undoubtedly one of the most famous images in the history of fashion.
Avedon would later describe his photograph as "a choreographic moment. I saw the elephants under the glass roof and I immediately knew I had to find the right dress. I seized all the potential one could see."
The book also reveals the Maison’s creations by showing Christian Dior's sketches alongside the photographer’s images, and further recounts this captivating story through anecdotes from Justine Picardie, the author and editor-in-chief of Harper's Bazaar UK.
Dior by Avedon is now available in France and the United Kingdom.
