On the seat of every chair for the presentation of Saint Laurent's menswear collection for the Spring/Summer 2015 season was a card that read "Psych Rock's New Rising" and with that, the tone of the runway was set.
Psych Rock, short for psychedelic rock, is a style of rock music that is inspired or influenced by psychedelic culture and attempts to replicate and enhance the mind-altering experiences of psychedelic drugs. It often uses new recording techniques and effects and draws on non-Western sources such as the ragas and drones of Indian music. Wikipedia
With the music from the Mystic Braves opening the show, audiences familiar with creative director Hedi Slimane's earlier shown disco tuxedos and shimmering jackets were met with a different style for this upcoming season; with models adorning striped Mexican ponchos and skinny matador pants embroidered down the side.
To describe the feeling would be easier: it was Rock 'n Roll in the Mexican desert.
The designer showcased a variety of envelope-pushing "hobo" looks, including ubiquitous Woodstock-era styles (read: 60's) that saw ethnic pendants hung on naked torsos with embroidered waistcoats.
The Saint Laurent outerwear is set to be the staple fashion item, with jackets for the cool temperatures of the desert evening ranging from military-inspired cuts with python skin, blazers with floral prints, sequinned or studded, to denim ones matched with shearling vests.
Scarves as well as crochet blankets round out the Mexican cowboy or Woodstock hippie look, however your mood fancies you.
Another signature look was the slender jeans with cowboy boots setting the tone for what would be THE silhouette and footwear for the upcoming seasons.
With Lenny Kravitz in the audience, a combination that would have appealed to the rocker was one reminiscent of Jimmy Hendrix, with the model sporting an afro hairstyle and leather waistcoat.
