Stereolab & Stereolounge

SINGAPORE Restaurant-bar Stereolounge and adjoining dance club Stereolab officially opened their doors on 5 August 2009, hosting a staggering 2,000 patrons. Guests were treated to a first-hand listen to the astounding custom-built sound systems in both rooms.

Targeted at the sophisticated and well-heeled aged 25 and up, Stereolounge and Stereolab aim to bring back the glamour to Singapore nightlife with a strong dedication to exceptional quality and an ultra-luxe sensibility, culled from the expertise of owners Yuan Oeij and Michel Lu.

From the food and drinks to the décor, sound systems and music programming, Stereolounge and Stereolab express an appreciation of a lifestyle missing in the landscape of Singapore nightlife for some time.

Stereolounge
The organically-shaped room is clad in a glamourous, yet warm mix of wood and bronze mirror, with plush velveteen seats and button poufs surrounding a DJ console of dark wood.

With a capacity of 150, Stereolounge serves up a heady mix of Latin-inspired cuisine, along with delicious cocktails. Following the venues focus on luxury, only premium alcohols are used. For example, Smirnoff Black, the more premium range of the Smirnoff vodkas is used as the house vodka.

The unique Stereolounge food menu is inspired by Latin and Cuban cuisine, with distinct spices, hearty meat skewers and wraps. While most bars feature deep fried finger food, Stereolounge aims to provide guests with a delicious meal. Specialities include the Trio of Cuban Mini Beef Burgers with truffled mushrooms and arugula salad, the Honey-Grilled Chicken Skewers as well as the Spicy Meat Balls.

An eclectic range of DJs and musicians have been chosen to provide a carefully-curated weekly programme of aural pleasure. Some of the superstars of Stereolounge include Dave Tan of Singapore’s biggest band Electrico, Singapore music tastemaker Chris Ho, as well as the renowned Cosa Nostra comprising DJ Funk B*stard, saxophonist Kaye, vocalist Michaela Therese and electric guitarist Munir.

Stereolounge also has daily happy hours from Monday to Friday between 5pm and 9pm, where drinks by glass go for 50% off.

Stereolab
With a secret back alley entrance, Stereolab is reminiscent of underground dance clubs in music-centric cities such as New York or Berlin. But from the first moment of entry, you are enveloped in rich dark wood and warm clear sound.

The 300-capacity dance club spared no expense in creating an atmosphere that was sexy, intimate, mysterious and yet homely all at once. As prominent music producer Case Woo said in his first encounter with Stereolab, “I’m home.”

The custom-designed sound system by Craig ‘Shorty’ Bernebeau of the award-winning Systems by Shorty was hand-built then flown from New York City. The fully analog high-fidelity audiophile system features clear and realistic sound powered by custom components including vacuum tube amplifiers.

What this means is that every nuance in every song will be heard clearly, while the loud volume will still allow guests to talk without having to shout. The painful and annoying ringing in the ear after visits to most clubs will also be non-existent.

Helming the system in Stereolab are legendary Singapore DJs, including Brendon P, Ramesh K and Godwin P, who have collective experience totaling almost a century. Vestax Pro Todd Omotani from Canada as well as Stephen Day from the UK will also be sharing deck time on a weekly basis with our residents. They will be focusing on the spectrums of House music and all its variants.
