In tribute to the master of fashion (1895-1972) and to mark the fortieth anniversary of his death, this exhibition unveils an exceptional collection.

More than seventy costumes and items of clothing sit alongside some forty haute couture coats and dresses designed by Cristóbal Balenciaga between 1937 and 1968. 

This exhibition displays designs by the great fashion designer himself, as well as items from his personal collection (dating back to the XVIIIth, XIXth and XXth centuries), generously donated by his family to the museum.

Among the clothes on display are over forty dresses and coats designed between 1937 and 1968 by Balenciaga - from the Galliera collection or on loan from the parent company - have been collected for this occasion. Accessories, photographs, sketches and other works complete the display and illustrate the "designer’s" passion for history.

Rendered with deceptive simplicity, Balenciaga's exquisite garments are considered among the pinnacles of 20th-century fashion design. The collection on view was donated to the museum in 1979, seven years after Balenciaga's death, and is displayed in its entirety for the first time.

As the Galliera museum is closed for renovations, this exhibition will take place at the Docks-Cité de la mode et du design (Docks-Cité for fashion and design).

The Cité de la Mode et du Design is located alongside the Seine, close to the Gare d’Austerlitz and the Gare de Lyon.
