SINGAPORE Selena Tan, Pam Oei and Emma Yong return to the stage this year with their trusty “chopstick”, Hossan Leong! This time, not as the Dim Sum Dollies®, but as part of an ensemble that includes “Broadway Beng” Sebastian Tan, veteran thespian Lim Kay Siu, drag queen comedian Kumar and multi-talented entertainer Najip Ali.
All will appear in Dream Academy’s first ever, full-length musical, SING DOLLAR! The Musical Comedy About Money, opening in July at the Esplanade Theatre.
Selena Tan, both writer and cast member of SING DOLLAR!, is excited about putting Singapore’s top actors and comedians on stage together, in an ‘EIGHT-IN- ONE’ Recession Laughter Package!
“It’s important in this climate to offer value for money, and having eight crazy people in one show will be more laughs and mayhem than anyone could ask for!"
"...But seriously, I wanted to create a musical that would get us fantasising and laughing about money again, instead of worrying so much about it.”
SING DOLLAR! is also about rallying Singaporeans to support Local – our local currency, as well as our own arts and entertainment industry. In a quirky tribute to local ‘newsmakers’, the cast will take on a mad assortment of characters, from the Bank Executive and Moonlighting Maid, to the Tiger Beer Aunty and Bangladeshi Migrant Worker. AND, in a rare cross-dressing twist, audiences will get to see Kumar play a man, and Najip, a woman!
SING DOLLAR! is set to entertain with irreverent humour, cabaret-inspired numbers and cheeky social commentary. But Tan hopes that it will serve as more than just entertainment. Says Tan, “SING DOLLAR! is ultimately a celebration of love, friendship, diversity and resilience. It’s about Singaporeans and those who choose to live and work here, and our never-say-die attitude.”
