Jaquet Droz presents a unique vision in the Petite Heure Minute Red Gold Japanese Garden

19 January 2026

A tranquil landscape of water lilies and koi carp has found its way onto the wrist. The creation by Jaquet Droz is a unique piece, a synthesis of excellence designed for a singular aesthetic.

The dial is not merely decorated with mother-of-pearl; it is carved entirely from an ultra-white variety sourced from the distant Pacific. Upon this luminous base, a dreamlike composition of Japanese culture unfolds, aimed at fostering a sense of inner peace. A traditional temple dominates the top of the dial, rendered with a delicacy that includes carved balconies and multiple floors.

To achieve a striking three dimensional effect, artisans applied a subtle layer of semi-translucent grey paint to the temple to depict every cast shadow. This architectural backdrop is layered behind twenty five individual appliques, most of which are hand carved from mother-of-pearl. The precision required for this work is staggering, with some elements executed to within a tenth of a millimetre.

The natural world is represented through reeds and water lilies on the left, while a cherry tree and a lantern stand on the right. In the center, koi carp appear to dance within the water. One of the most delicate features is a reed stem only 0.1 mm thick, which required an ingenious process to attach it to the surrounding petals.

While mother-of-pearl is the primary medium, yellow gold is used for the cherry tree branches and the frame of the lantern. The realism extends to the very eyes of the carp, which sparkle with 0.5 mm diamonds. At the heart of the dial, a mother-of-pearl cabochon reflects the entire river scene, a technique reminiscent of the light in a Vermeer painting.

The technical execution is as refined as the artistry, with the hour and minute hands gliding beneath the intricate decoration. A glass box crystal covers the red gold case, offering a clear view of the hand engraved details that remain a refined and singular secret. It emphasizes the personal nature of this horological achievement.
